External Table dropdown/select list

I have searched the forum but cant find any related information
I would like the user to be able to select from a dropdown list of data that comes from another table in the DB. Currently I have a list of 400 golf courses and the list is growing on a daily basis. This makes it very difficult to keep adding a new course to the choices field in the dropdown field.

I see there is an option for an shortcode field and was wondering if this can not be used to write some code that would select the external data table and display to the user for selection
