    Hello People,

I’m not sure if this is a WordPress option I need to change, a ubuntu server option or a Physical Network change.

I am hosting my own wordpress, at home, on a little old PC with ubuntu 7.10 LAMP. I have a DSL modem that I have setup port forwarding on and behind that I have a Smoothwall box that protects my home network, this also has port forwarding on it to allow http traffic to my wordpress site. This setup is working Great!!

BUT.. The issue I’m having it that external connection is fine but I can not access it from inside my network. When I type in the Internal IP address wordpress pushes me to the URL I put in the WordPress address (URL) which then resolves to the IP address of my modem, showing me my modem’s Admin page.

Is there a way I can still view and edit my wordpress at home without having to VPN to work to do it?

I’m new to this stuff so it’s all fun, though I’m a little bit stuck on this one.

    thanks for any help,
    Duncan.

  • No, you cannot access any WP installation from “inside and outside” in the same time.

So, is WordPress only accessible from both directions when it is in a corporate enviroment where there is a DNS service running on the internal network?

That’s too technical for me – I am just a WP user, not a server admin. But any WP installation is accessible ONLY at the address that you put in the Settings > General: blog url and WP url.

What about putting a Hosts file on my PC?

A guy I work with said this could be a solution. I used to use hosts files at company I worked for about 8 years ago that didn’t have a Internet Connection but had lots of Servers.

I’ll post the results up here.

A hosts file is the solution.

    For Windows XP Pro c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
    For Windows XP Home c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

I opened it with notepad and just added a line at the end with the internal IP address and External Domain Name and saved it.

    192.168.1.200 example.domain.com

    I hope this helps others.

Yeah, that works. However, your Windows XP Pro file location is incorrect. On both Windows XP Pro and Home, the hosts file will be located in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\.

I’m guessing that your Pro station was an upgrade from windows 2000.

Also, if you need this to work on more than just one computer, yes you’ll either need to go to every computer on the network and change the hosts file, or add an entry in your DNS server to point to WordPress.
