Extract PDF Title metadata on upload to Media Library

  • There are plugins to extract the Title metadata property from PDFs and insert it into the Media Library post Title field. For example:

    However, they’re overly complicated to configure and come along with many other features for managing the Media Library.

    It would be great to have the default behavior of WordPress be to populate the Media Library post Title field for PDFs with the PDF title metadata like it does for jpg images.

    In addition, there doesn’t appear to be any plugins that will allow the Media Library to write back any changes to the PDF title metadata field.

    Why is this important?

    • Significant times savings for preparing PDFs if they already have good titles in their metadata.
    • Improves SEO for the PDFs and provides search engine results with proper titles(e.g. Google).

    Thank you for the suggestion. One thing I don’t understand. What sort of changes in WP would you want written back to the file’s title meta data? It seems to me since the file’s title property is not editable from within WP, there would be no reason to update the meta data in WP.
