• Hello,
We have a question regarding posting links to our Facebook:

We are a journalism website that posts a number of new articles every day. We post links to these same articles on our Facebook to direct readers to our website.

Here is the link to our website: https://consortiumnews.com/

And here is the link to our Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Consortiumnewscom/150931404928776

We have recently made a number of changes to our website in order to become PCI compliant. One major change we made was ordering a Dedicated IP address and SSL certificate and installing the HTTPS plugin on WordPress in order to force all of our pages to redirect to https.

Since making these changes, whenever we try to post a link to a newly added story from our website, Facebook does not produce an associated image and clip. It used to automatically generate an image and “blurb” about each story. This is a problem, since readers are far less likely to follow just a URL than a designated link with an image and a description.

We have tried the Facebook Graph Object Debugger to test the newly added links and receive the following message:

FOR EXAMPLE, USING THE LINK: https://consortiumnews.com/2014/12/10/facing-realities-of-race/

    WE RECEIVE THE FOLLOWING MESSAGE:
Error parsing input URL, no data was cached, or no data was scraped.
To find the object, these are the redirects we had to follow
    original https://consortiumnews.com/2014/12/10/facing-realities-of-race/

    301 https://consortiumnews.com/2014/12/10/facing-realities-of-race/

The following will be treated as a redirect by the crawler:
    ? A HTTP redirect
    ? A <link rel=”canonical” href=”..” /> tag
    ? A <meta property=”og:url” content=”..” /> tag
The final URL, which we tried to extract metadata from is highlighted in bold

To troubleshoot, we tried deactivating the HTTPS plugin, posting an article to WordPress, and then posting that article to Facebook and it worked correctly (ie. it automatically generated an image and description). We reactivated the HTTPS plugin and posted another story to WordPress and then tried posting it to Facebook and it did NOT work. This leads me to believe that there’s a problem with the plugin and that, in order to successfully post to Facebook, we will have to deactivate the plugin every time we post an article to WordPress. This is not a viable option, however, since this would require too much back-and-forth work and we have to serve our site as HTTPS in order to be PCI compliant.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get Facebook to generate an image and descriptive clip without having to deactivate our HTTPS plugin?

We are a very small company without IT expertise or an IT department so please be as descriptive and clear as possible in your responses.

Please let me know if you need any more information or if I left out anything crucial.

Thank you in advance to the awesome WordPress Community!

  • Hi there,
I’m having the same problem after we changed security settings, in that rather than showing the specific post/title/intro/thumbnail when we post the link, we are only seeing the general website URL. Did you ever find a solution? Thanks in advance for sharing any information!

We are having the same problem but also with Google +
Is anyone trying to figure a fix for this?
