  • I think this is due to Facebook having cached that URL on your site (or maybe you changed the URL/permalink at some point?).

Can you try temporarily changing the permalink at the top of the post editor, to something like “orders-of-magnitune”, leaving everything else as-is?

It’s not just this post, but most of the posts that get published that have this problem. We have not changed the URL of any of these posts that are exhibiting the problem. If you try today’s post, and all of the other Recent Posts down the right-hand side of the page for at least the past week, the Facebook share button does not provide a proper link to that post.

When I do some searching online for “https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php parameters”, I get articles that talk about Facebook no longer permitting parameters with sharer.php. Do you need to re-work the plug-in to support Facebook’s changes?

    thanks.

I’ve done some experimenting, and I’m having better luck using this for the Facebook sharing URL: https://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=%%url%%

However, Facebook doesn’t seem to like the trailing “/” character in the URL. Is there a way to configure this to leave off the trailing %2F character? Seems like it will work perfectly if that can be done.

    thanks,

Is there an answer for this yet? I’d like to get the Facebook share icon working properly on my site.

    thanks,

Sorry I was looking at this and forgot to reply. Facebook seems to be very finicky when it comes to URLs and I’m trying to understand if there’s a way to solve this appropriately.

Unfortunately the URL parameter is provided by WordPress and I don’t feel like removing the “/” character from all URLs to fix this particular issue (as it seems to break only in certain cases).

I will try to contact FB to see if they can fix their sharer.php, unfortunately the only API they provide that work properly are the JavaScript ones which our plugin tries to avoid because of the extra load.

I actually found a simple way to provide you with an URL that doesn’t contain slashes and that in fact you can specifically use just for Facebook and none of the other networks, it will be in the next release 1.6.9 (due shortly).

All you will have to do is replace the variable %%url%% in the facebook sharing link with the variable %%url_trimmed%%.

Thank you, Synved! The %%url_trimmed%% worked as soon as I updated to new version 1.6.9 of the plugin. Now all of the blog posts are giving a proper Facebook sharing page and URL when clicked. I really appreciate your help fixing this!

    thanks,
    Luann
