I’ve gotten this same error, 2.3 worked well, 2.5 does not work and I get that same message

For three days now my WP 2.5.1 installation is practically useless because I can’t upload images and other files.
Same problem with importing an XML file of a former WP installation.

When you search the forum here you get 19 hits. Sometimes I had hope when I read that somebody apparently solved the problem. Tried his/her solution. Didn’t work for me.

All file/folder permissions are correct, open_basedir in my php.ini is not set (I’m running apache/mysql/WP on my MacMini here at home), added the upload_tmp_dir variable and pointed it to /tmp, file_uploads is On, etc… Nothing helps.

Did a completely new installation of another WP 2.5.1 from the original (german) distribution .zip file together with a fresh new database — same problem again!

So I suspect it has nothing to do with the database or the WP installation but with my server setup? But there are other WordPresses (< 2.5) running on the same server with the same PHP version and the same mySql version and everything works fine with them.
I even got a 2.5 WP to work (uploading of images worked) but after the 2.5.1 update this feature stopped working. ??

I’m willing to support you developers and experts! Ask me and I’ll do stuff, check things, alter setting and report back. Way too many people seem to have this problem with this essential feature!
WP is pretty much useless without being able to upload files or to import a former WP installation’s data!

Ever thought of using an FTP client, and uploading your images that way? Last I checked, that wasnt all that archaic.

Ever thought of always using the command line of an OS instead of the Explorer/Finder/… for such a basic functionality like copying files?

If a software package HAS feature x I want to USE feature x and not workaround a non-working feature x.

And how would I reference an ftp-uploaded file in an article? By typing the url to the file by hand? Cool, now THAT’s a modern, state-of-the-art approach! Does it work in other CMS/Blog-Systems like that, too? Nope.

Well, I know that app. 98-99% of all WP users probably won’t have this problem. But still, 1-2% can be many folks. And if the developers can’t reproduce the problem: I offered my help (I’m an IT guy, too, studied CS, working for over 25 years with computers now). And I’m sure all the user who still have this problem (and I see lots of posts here and in the german forum and in a Google search) would help, too.

So, to start off: what, *exactly*, are the correct folder permissions and owners for
wp-content/
wp-content/uploads/
?

My apache (process name “httpd” and NOT the one that comes with OS X but the one from the XAMPP package) runs as user “nobody”. Should the above mentioned folders be owned by this user “nobody”? Or should they belong to me, my user account? Does it matter at all?

Does wp-content/ have to be 777? (It is here.) Or is 755 sufficient? (Tried both, though.)
How about wp-content/uploads/? 777, right?

Seems a similar vein came up just the other day — I’ll tell you what I told him/her — deal with it.

Here’s some common sense for you:

It might suck that something doesn’t work, but guess what, thats kinda how life is, sometimes shit doesnt work. Life doesn’t end because of it.

That depends on how you define ‘correct’? Some of normal folk consider 777 to be insecure.

Whooami – if you dont know how to fix something that someone is trying to find a fix for – why bother upsetting folk !!!! most of us guys and gals here just get on with each other not jump on each other!! Yes WP is great and there are many ways to skin a fish but you dont have to be so pompous with it !!!

Ive got at least 17 sites running on WP uploading images using the uploader but one is not and is bringing up ‘cannot write to disk’ and I have the uploads folder set to 777 on 2.5.1 install . Oh and I know how to upload images to the server and what not but the pneumatic systems engineer that would like this feature doesnt . And yes the reality is that there are folk in the real world using WP and would like the image up-loader to work !!! For all those out there having the same problem I use WLWriter to add images to my blogs its just my friend has a MAC and this isn’t compatible with WLW…

I too, am having the same issue. It’s only with this install – all of my other installations are fine. I have tried everything that I could think of and everything that has been recommended.

I even tried re-installing previous version (2.5), with no success. Hope there’s a solution soon.

Make sure to check your php.ini (whether IIS for windows or Apache on any OS). Check for the following parameter to be present:


upload_tmp_dir="/tmp"


If it’s not there create one. If it’s there make sure the path exists and that the account your web site is using has permission to that folder.

On two occasions this has caught me. The second time was today when I realized I accidentally removed my php.ini file when I switched to WordPress a week ago.

Sounds like some of you may have accidentally removed the file when you upgraded to 2.5.x from a previous version.

Any fix for this? I have the same problem, and it started suddenly. One moment I was uploading fine (all day, actually), next upload is failing. I have nothing new to add. Just really need a solution!

I’m having the same issue which I just noticed this morning after a having a year of good uploads.

One of the problems is that I am pretty low-tech and don’t even know where to find the files you’re referencing (upload_tmp_dir=”/tmp” and php.ini) though I’ve looked in my ftp for them.

My host had issues 2 days ago which took my site down for a half hour and this morning was the first time I tried uploading images. Could this be part of my issue?

This is the email from my host:
“The server required a reboot and ran a disk check before coming back online. The actual downtime before we rebooted the server was only 10 minutes, but the disk check takes forever to complete.”

Any thoughts?

Hi. I just started having this problem this evening (Sunday the 24th)

I uploaded a few things fine tonight, then all of a sudden i got the FAILED warning as well. Any help please??
