Fails with .mobi and .epub

I’m a self-published author and would like to offer .mobi and .epub versions of stories on my WordPress site. There are normally restricted files for some reason, so I was hoping this plugin would solve the issue.

I’ve installed this plugin, but upon attempting to upload the files, received the error:

“Sorry, this file type is not permitted for security reasons.”

Offering these file types to my readers is one of the primary reasons I moved from wp.com to .org, so the security blocking is extremely frustrating and I’d love to find a work around that doesn’t include me tinkering with my functions.php or.htaccess files.
