Ok I have an active thread going now but no one is replying.

I knocked out two of my wordpress sites by doing the auto update from 3.0.5 to 3.1.

The one website I totally killed. I totally killed all the files, I totally killed the database. Downloaded/unzipped the 3.1 install. Set up a new database, ran the install.

I’m in the back end. Go to the front end and get this:

This webpage has a redirect loop
The webpage at https://ra-wordpress.com/ has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer.
    Here are some suggestions:
    Reload this web page later.
    Learn more about this problem.
Error 310 (net::ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS): There were too many redirects.

Are you running this on a Windows server? This seems to be the common thread amongst the other posts I’ve found with the infinite loop issue.

    Yes… windows server.

I even went into IIS and stopped services to this site and restarted it but it didn’t help.

Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem? I have a Windows hosting account through a 3rd party running a WordPress site, and when I updated to 3.1, my site is broken and I when I go to the URL, I get the error message:

This webpage has a redirect loop
The webpage at <my site> has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer.

Any luck on this issue? I would be greatly in debt for a solution to this problem!

Ok, I found a solution (at https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/ran-auto-update-for-31-and-now-site-doesnt-work-deleted-mait-mode-file/page/2?replies=36#post-1970036 ) and I wanted to post for everyone else!

I have Windows hosting through a 3rd Party host and when I updated to WordPress 3.1, I got the following error when I went to my home page: This webpage has a redirect loop. Here are the steps I took to solve this problem:

    1. Go to the WP admin page at: https://your_site_name/wp-admin/ (it should still work, even if your home page doesn’t).
    2. Login and go to the Plug-ins admin page.
    3. Install and activate the “Permalink Fix & Disable Canonical Redirects Pack” plugin (at https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/permalink-fix-disable-canonical-redirects-pack/).
    4. Go back to your homepage, it should work!

Anyway, I really hope this helps save someone else the problems and headache that I had!!! Good luck!

I had Top Level Categories – https://www.fortes.com/projects/wordpress/top-level-cats plugin installed and once I removed it my site worked!! According to one of my friends there’s a reworked version of Top Level Categories by a group called Foliovision called FV Top Level Categories. They’ve worked to resolve issues since the creator of the original appears to have abandoned it, and they appear to have it updated for 3.1, as well.

Ok, this issue has been submitted a the fix has been submitted to WordPress and has been fixed in WordPress 3.1.2. Please close this thread now (unless you are still having problems). It looks like it is just getting spammed now…not that I don’t like the praise, even if it is spam :)!
