False “Plugin needs update” situation

  • Every time I log into WordPress because I’ve been notified that certain plugins need to be updated, I go to Plugins section and there are NO updates available. A little red number still sits on the Plugins link in Dashboard, but none of the plugins actually need updating. Happens across several sites I manage, all using 4.7.3.

    This happened to one of my sites about 4 years ago and I just left it alone since it’s more annoying than harmful. Now, a second site is experiencing the same thing. It happened both times while uninstalling and reinstalling plugins while attempting to diagnose which plugins were causing errors. I’m sure it’s leftover plugin data in the database. Someone has the answer out here.
