Fantastic idea and works really well
-
I’m developing WordPress sites from scratch with Advanced Custom Fields. I don’t wan’t overcomplicated, bloated builders that keeps adding features for the sake of it. Why? Because my clients don’t wan’t that. They barely have the time, resources or skills to keep their site updated, so the interface has to be simple.
Advanced Custom Fields makes me able to make that simplicity with only the fields and features my clients need.
But.
I have missed a super simple builder for a long time. Using flexible content from ACF is not really a builder. The interface is clunky and quickly confusing with many fields.
Gutenberg is exactly what my client needs. A simple builder integrated into the core where I can build only the components (blocks) the client needs. Together with ACF I can rapidly build a complex site yet easy to manage.
However I do have some criticism. You should not enable Gutenberg for WooCommerce. That doesn’t make any sense and just overcomplicate things. I can see a few edge cases where someone would “design” each product page differently with Gutenberg, but for the vast majority of webshops, it’s all about data. The client should enter all the data and the theme should take care of everything else.
I do give it 5 stars though to negate all the hate Gutenberg gets. It’s always the same. When Facebook added the newsfeed, everyone was out with the pitchforks. When Spotify made a total overhaul of their design to the pitch black colours and the bold green, the users were furious. Who even remember those changes besides me?
I’m so tired of that mentality. Everything new get’s an extreme amount of hate, but it’s all forgotten just 3-4 weeks after release.
