I created a new Page and when I click to view it I get a 404 not found.
If you are using permalinks, check that your .htaccess file is writable – usually chmod 666 – when you create new Pages. WP needs to write new rules into the .htaccess file for every new Page.

Don’t forget to change the permissions after creating the new Page. Leaving it writable all the time it’s a security risk!

Sorry to pop in here again, but why do we need a separate thread for this when we already have a very concise user-editable FAQ in the Codex? Why can’t we just contribute to the Codex’s FAQ instead?

Well, presumably because people will see a FAQ topic here, and actually READ IT….?

Only if it stays as a “sticky”. Otherwise, the search function searches both the forums and the Codex, so the Codex FAQs can be found just as easily. The problem is that people just don’t want to look. It doesn’t matter where you put it, they still won’t see it if they don’t want to. In the long run, I think that it would be better to consolidate all of our FAQs in one location, rather than split them up into two completely different locations.

macmanx, while the ideal situation is to have the same information both in the FAQ threads as well as the Codex, I think (and this is merely my speculation and experience) that a lot of new users are more familiar with a forum, and look here first for help with their initial questions. Also, some if not a majority of users are not familiar with a wiki, and do not feel comfortable adding/modifying the codex. The more places new users can get answers, the better.

Yes, but if the users do want to search and choose to search for “FAQ” (for example), they will find both the Codex page and this forum thread. Matt chose to combine the forum and Codex searches in order to bring Codex pages, such as the FAQs, into the forum search results. Why confuse the users with two sources? Not to mention that most of the FAQs posted here have already been covered in the Codex, and “Delete .htaccess” isn’t always the answer to “I get a ‘Internal Server Error 500’ on my site.”
