• Hello, I am hoping someone can help me.

When I was uploading to the latest version, I received the following message:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_get_update_data() in /home/content/09/6500309/html/theknittinggoddess/wp-admin/menu.php on line 34

I have googled to find a fix and found this:

1 backup all files and the dbase (just to be safe)

2 Log in with FTP: rename the plugin folder to plugin-old and delete .maintenance file
3 download new 3.3 and unzip it.

4 Log in with FTP: upload all wp 3.3 files, overwrite all files
    5 log in with wp-admin
Wp will tell you it needs to update the dbase. press ok
Wp will give you access to the dashboard.
Most likely your theme will look like …. and wp will tell you it is broken. An ugly twenty eleven theme can be running now.
    Np
    6Reactivate your theme.

I don’t understand the instructions. The first thing it says to do is to run a backup but I am not able to access anything on my site. Then I don’t know how to log in with FTP. I do not know what that means.

    Thank you. Elizabeth

  • Running a backup requires you to access your web hosting account through whatever means your web hosting company offers you. cPanel, or their own custom “system management” panel.

As for FTP, here is a great place to start reading:
    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/FTP_Clients

To clarify: none of these have anything to do with WordPress. The same would be true for any web site, no matter what software you use.
