Fatal error after last update (5.0.1)

For everybody having the error, I could repair 4/5 (one I cannot access yet) of your installs with this error using the very last version. In all cases, you need to delete the current version, and re-download it. Normally the last version works. I will continue to track all this, there might be a last piece of code which is not right but it works for all the installs I accessed.

For me 5.0.4 fixed it. But I feel this was a rushed update and updating it manually on 40+ sites is not fun at all!

I still do not like the additional menu item, although it can be hidden which makes changing settings a burden. Too visible for a plugin/author which should run in the background!

Sorry about that Alex. It’s just an excuse, I know, but that was the biggest update ever to the plugin for the latest 5 years, I took advantage of a big change to actually make an even bigger one. But it went well, only the few very first users with specific options ran into issues and I could find/patch them. It took 3 quick versions but that was done.

I actually ask 500 users about this menu, if I should do it or not, and actually what it does and how is the result of that survey. Thing is most plugins should be set up my developers, or once at the beginning, then all hidden I believe. And that way, it’s easy to hide all my plugins at once by the website developer. But also it avoids adding settings menu all over the place; it gathers them at the same place. I think it’s better than plugin just adding a big menu. I am adding a big menu that gathers all my plugins, not each of them.

But there is no best way. WordPress installs are all different from each other, I just try to keep things clean, but there will be never a best way of doing it.

Think about users that use only one of your plugins (I think most of your users only have WP Retina running). They have now a visible & too important menu item more than they need. I don’t like this behavior for other even bigger authors like Ninja Forms etc. Even they have a much better cause for having their own menu item. They have own post types and are not only a collection of plugins whose settings are collected in an own menu item.

For me the importance of WP Retina is fading. Setting up a few additional images sizes for native responsive images is much easier and robust for the future than using a plugin.

Actually most of my users are using more than one plugin (very often my renamer or/and the cleaner), and they are not necessarily using WP Retina 2x.

I actually do love using WP Retina 2x. I develop my own themes, and I much prefer to have a limited number of image sizes (4-5 big maximum, I don’t want to see Retina images registered as image size for each – confuse the users and other plugins) and I like the retina to be generated in the background then handled nicely by the plugin, typically through Responsive Images, which is, without having to rewrite the HTML. When a theme is properly developed + the plugin, it is really neat.

Then, when migrating to a new theme, I can actually bulk delete the Retina images, migrate, use “Regenerate Thumbnails”, “Regenerate Thumbnails HTML”, and my plugin again to generate the Retina Images and right away, I have a clean WordPress, even though I did a big migration.

Along with that, I love the fact that the plugin does lazy-loading on the retina images. I love very and optimized website and the plugin is actually still good at this time. I had many thoughts along the way, I thought it could be killed easily but the way WordPress (does not) evolves I can see use for it for a lonf time still. That is also why many developers still use it, and it is recommended my themes. I had a lot of discussions with the users and developers around the subject and that is why the plugin evolves and also got cleaner to remain very useful.

But yes, you can do without it as well. Like everything on WordPress, no plugin is vital, not even a Ninja Form, there are even better forms out there without using a plugin.

I’m still getting a 500 server response if I download and activate the new 5.04 version. I have been a premium member for about two years..

Hi, facing the same error, but only on 1 of my sites thus far. Weird that many of my sites use it and facing no errors.

I got this from error_log, long list of error lines that goes like this:
PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 72 bytes) … plugins/wp-retina-2x/inc/simple_html_dom.php on line 1544

This is different @chengzong, you probably have a very long HTML page somewhere that takes too much memory to process, same error has here for example: https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/allowed-memory-size-of-67108864-bytes-exhausted-tried-to-allocate-119030-bytes/. It’s unusual, your page is really that big? Anyway you can change the PHP settings if you can, and that will do it. But that’s odd.
