I tried to access the customizer and suddenly I got a message: Fatal error – allowed memory size (it had a series of numbers but I haven’t been able to recreate this) within the (there was a string of directories leading to the wp-includes folder) wp-includes/functions.php line 346.

I was able to exit out of the customizer and everything remained good in the dashboard but when I tried to go to the site at the top of the admin bar it seemed to get into a bad redirect loop.

In two browsers I’m able to get into the dashboard fine but the customizer won’t show the pages. But I am able to navigate to the website front page via the admin bar. In the browser I was using even after clearing the cache, I get the bad hung up loop with nothing loading.

Any ideas or help would be appreciated!

If you’re seeing this error either suddenly (no specific task was done to cause the error) or frequently, try deactivating all plugins to rule-out a plugin-specific issue and try switching themes to rule-out a theme-specific issue.

Otherwise, here are three ways to increase PHP’s memory allocation:

    1. If you can edit or override the system php.ini file, increase the memory limit. For example, memory_limit = 128M

    2. If you cannot edit or override the system php.ini file, add php_value memory_limit 128M to your .htaccess file.

    3. If neither of these work, it’s time to ask your hosting provider to temporarily increase PHP’s memory allocation on your account. Keep in mind that most decent hosting providers allocate 64 MB to PHP under each account, and most decent hosting providers allow users to temporarily increase the memory allocation. If your hosting provider won’t accommodate you, perhaps it’s time to find a new hosting provider.

(in the above examples, the limit is set to 128MB)

Thanks for your quick response. Where in the .htaccess file do I place that bit?

You place it anywhere in the .htaccess file, as long as it is on its own line.

Thanks so much for your help! I actually found the php.ini file and changed the allowed memory – it was low – at 32. Thanks again!
