Fatal error: Call to a member function add_rewrite_tag() on a non-object

    I have been trying to upgrade my installation from 2.8.4, but after the install (which reports as successful) my site is unreachable with this error:

    Fatal error: Call to a member function add_rewrite_tag() on a non-object in /home/nore9152/public_html/home/wp-includes/taxonomy.php on line 333

    I’ve tried upgrading both through cPanel via my webhost, and directly from my WordPress Dashboard, but get the same error both times. I can reinstall from a local backup and everything works fine again, but I’m back to the old version. Any clues?
