Fatal error, unexpected '{'

Downloaded, installed, tried to activate, got this message:

Plugin could not be activated because it triggered a fatal error.
Parse error: syntax error, unexpected ‘{‘ in /usr/local/pem/vhosts/237480/webspace/siteapps/96784/htdocs/wp-content/plugins/wordsocial/wordsocial.php on line 319

I didn’t edit the file before or after uploading it. The { is at the beginning of a try-catch statement, and has a matching } in the right place.
