• First received and error that we had insufficient permission to update WordPress. After updating permissions with the host (1&1), we attempted another update (both automatic and manual). The site is working fine on the front end but the WordPress installation backend is formatting weird. Now, when trying to update to 4.0 (or update plugins) we receive the following error message…
Fatal error: Call to undefined function mbstring_binary_safe_encoding() in /homepages/20/d493039467/htdocs/clickandbuilds/WordPress/JupiterOBGYNSite/wp-admin/includes/class-wp-filesystem-direct.php on line 62

Any help here would be MUCH appreciated. Is this an issue with the host? The clickandbuild application is a 1&1 thing.

    Thanks,

    Ricky

Try manually resetting your plugins (no Dashboard access required). If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the cause.

If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via FTP or SFTP, navigate to /wp-content/themes/ and rename the directory of your currently active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).
