    I am attempting to upgrade from WordPress 2.8.4 to 3.1

    I took a backup and then attempted to upgrade automatically to 3.1.

    I waited for around 10 minutes but the dashboard was still showing a white page so I canceled that and when I tried to get into the dashboard I received the error:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function set_current_screen() in /usr/www/users/pl779/wp-admin/admin.php on line 142

    I downloaded 3.1 and extracted the files and attempted to manually upgrade it. I followed all the instructions and there shouldn’t have been a problem. But now when I try to go to the Dashboard I get that exact same error again.

    Can anyone tell me what it is and how I can fix it?

    Call to undefined function could mean that your upgrade probably did not succeed. Do a manual update via FTP instead: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Updating_WordPress#Manual_Update

    I did try and upgrade manually. As I said in my original post, I downloaded the 3.1 setup and manually installed it via FTP. I followed those same instructions that you linked to, but I get the same error.

    Any ideas?

    you may also try (if you already have not tried):

    -clearing cache in your browser before viewing the updated page. To clear cache in your browser, press clrl+f5 keys simultaneously. Also, try different computer/different browser.

    -contacting the hosting provider if they have any problem at their end, or they made any changes to your account, or if there are any limitations/restrictions, etc. Also check with them if you need to upgrade the hosting account in order to install and run your verson of the WordPress.

    -make sure all files/folders got uploaded, plus they got uploaded to the rihgt location.

    -deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to narrow down and possibly fix the problem. If the problem goes away, activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the culprit.

    If you don’t have access to your admin area, try deactivating them manually via FTP or phpMyAdmin.

    -switching to the default theme (“twentyten”) for a moment by renaming your current theme’s folder in wp-content/themes. The idea is to force WordPress to fall back to the default theme to rule out any theme-specific issue.

    If you don’t have access to your admin area, then access your server via FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

    Man, my traffic just dropped right after I upgraded, I hope I didn’t lose all my content!!!

    I have tried clearing my cache and used different browsers. The problem has changed now, instead of showing an error it shows a blank page.

    I tried disabling the plugins and switching to the default theme via FTP but that is not working.

    I am going to try and restore a full website backup.

    The main issue is that for some reason, when updating plugins or WordPress, it loads for around 5 to 10 minutes or even indefinitely which isn’t right at all. From what I am used to, it usually downloads and installs the plugin practically instantly. So if I can restore the backup and get the website working again, how can I fix this problem so I can update WordPress?

    All my content is gone, it appears, and my traffic is completely gone. The last thing I did was update Word Press.

    Thanks! I deactivated all plugins and it restored the content. I hope it restores the traffic!
