Feature Image poor quality!

Can anyone help? I want to use feature images but the quality is just awful!

https://cetacousin.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/15295479352_0b1d8d3788_k-720×340.jpgI know if the site has 3 columns, it does resize to 720 OK but I dont want the photo to expand – anyway to disable this so the 720 width one is displayed instead?
