• Hi there!
First off thanks for the plugin! Nowdays trolls management has become a must (unfortunately). So, great idea and thank you for the good work.

I’m still to implement it into my site (actually, I have comments disabled just now, one reason being past experiences of troll storms on another) and I was wondering if I could suggest a feature I’d find very useful: to give a site admin the option to decide for a commenter to be globally ignored.

That would be very helpful in service to our other users, and another tool in the arsenal of moderators.

Interesting suggestion – thanks – but there are some things to think over.

The way the plugin works, an administrative global ignore would mainly serve to obscure all past comments by a given commenter.

Ignoring on this plug-in is registered by screen-name, so it’s obviously different from banning a commenter by email or IP address (built-in features of WordPress). Ignoring would also be easy to evade as far as future comments were concerned, though whether troll commenters would generally be able to figure it out or not is another question. Maybe most wouldn’t.

So, the simplest implementation would be this: If an admin (or other registered user with designated capability level or higher) ignored a commenter, that commenter would go on an Administrative Ignored list (by screen name). Comments by Administratively Ignored user would come up as Ignored for all visitors.

    Options to consider might be

    1) Making it possible for other users to un-ignore the commenter, either temporarily or until re-ignored by in the normal way.

    2) Whether or not administrators (or others if enabled) would themselves see the comments subject to being ignored

    3) Whether it would be worth it to enable application of the built-in “ban by IP” and “ban by email address” features.

Maybe after you’ve actually tried it out, you can make your request more specific – I’ll think about it!

    Thank you for caring!
    Nice reply.
I see now how to implement such feature may be quite a lot of work on your side.

Yes, the idea is to offer a way for normal (and urban) users to have a cleaner comments section by default. And that would be up to a moderator of course.
Without resorting to banning, blocking or censoring (options that I personally dislike), the users would be first thing presented with the offending commenter’s comments all hidden by mod’s choice. Then, they should be able to un-hide one for checking out, and also to un-hide all if so choose.

Commenter’s comments should not be shadow-banned either, ie visible just to him/herself, but rightly there, just flagged and set ‘outside’ the reading flux, still readable but only by explicit per-user choice.

I like this non-banning but nevertheless users-caring approach!

Anyway, as I said, it would probably require a lot of work to implement this system on your plugin. Up to you then. ?? Let me know what you think and keep me updated ??

    Best regards,
    T
