I’d like the widget to figure out in which category it is showing, so that I need only add one widget and it automatically shows the subcategories of the category (or a post within that category) that the user is looking at.

And of course it would (as it already does) not show up if a category doesn’t have posts.

BTW – ideally it will also show the parent category and its subcategory’s.

    As in the following structure:

    category 1
    > subcategory a
    > subcategory b
    category 2
    > subcategory c
    > subcategory d

When I’m in subcategory c (post or category page), I’d like the widget to show category 2 & it’s subcategories. And as I said in my previous post: the widget should figure out in which category it is, so it knows which category & subcategories it should show.

Strictly speaking this is two requests.

The first request is to show the sub-categories of the parent of the post (or category) being shown – the plugin already does that. Select “Use first category of post as parent”.

The second request is to show the parent category in the list as well. You can achieve this by selecting “Title is parent category” and “Add parent link to title”. This will show the sub categories in a list and the parent as the title but with a link. It is not exactly the same as your request but it is close. I won’t be adding parents into the list because that’s not what this plugin is designed to do.
