When searching for new themes, I am SUPER FRUSTRATED by the fact that the Search function always offers me unrated themes first.

Can we please, please, please have a SORT function, so after we’ve applied our filters, we can sort the results by review ratings?

Do you generally find ratings a good criterion to judge themes by? I don’t because reviews are reflections of the user’s experience with a theme and do not generally reflect the functionality of the theme.

I always check ratings and support threads. Yes, ratings are subjective BUT what else do I judge by?

A theme with no reviews and no support threads is a theme that is untried and untested by users. Why take the risk?

So, why not put up a test site and try it for yourself?

    As @anevins said:

reviews are reflections of the user’s experience with a theme

Those experiences most likely involve configurations, plugins, customizations and user expectations that are not the same as yours. The only way you’ll konw for sure is to try it. Who knows, you might find a theme that few other users have tried, and even fewer have reviewed, that works out perfectly for your situation. And, if you post your own review, you’ll be helping others coming along after you.

Yes, of course I could put up a test site and test it myself. But why should I?

I don’t judge by the number of stars. I read the reviews to see if they are relevant to what I want to do. I also give the support forums more weight than the ratings. I look at what difficulties people experience and whether the developer is responding. That tells me a lot.

What ratings really tell me is how long the theme has been in existence. A theme with no ratings has so few users, it won’t have any support threads either.

If user experience is really so useless, why does WordPress provide the opportunity for ratings?
