Feature Request: "Written By" option for posts.

Isn’t it long past time to add this simple option, probably in the discussion settings? Why should we need a plugin or code editing to establish who the author of a post is? In a bygone era, when the creator/owner of a blog was the only one posting, perhaps this was not needed. Now with multi-author sites AND Google Authorship, this is an essential element.
