Featured image – blurry in thumbnail, but not in post

    Hi,

    I’m having problems with the ‘featured image’ being used as the thumbnail in a post list, using the alternate thumbnails view.

    I uploaded a high resolution image as my featured image for a post (to be displayed full width above the post title). The thumbnail on the post lists page is then generated (usually at 270×250 pixels but sometimes at 300×278), but the front page crops and zooms in on this image to make the thumbnail blurry, displaying it at well over 300 pixels wide. If I right click to open the thumbnail in a new tab, the image itself is much smaller than it’s size on the posts list page.

    Interestingly, if I set the thumbnail to ‘squared no expansion’ then it looks far less noticeable. When i set it to ‘rectangular no effect’ suddenly the image is blown up and pixelated. I have tried uploading in various aspect ratios to see if it has anything to do with that, but I can’t see any difference on the bluriness. I’ve turned on and off the various lightbox and responsive thumbnail settings, regenerated thumbnails, and it hasn’t made any difference.

    Has anyone else come across this issue? I’ve searched but can’t find anything that seems to be the exact same problem…

    I am using a hosts file at the moment to build the website, so not sure how to share the website to show you?

    The thumbnail for my post is all blurry – even though I’ve uploaded originally at over 1000px wide, then tried 270px wide and allsorts in between but it just always scales the image then zooms in to make it blurry… so weird!

    Ok – I couldn’t work out the problem as such, but I ended up using a child theme, and changing the default thumbnail size to be 400px wide using these instructions :

    Then regenerating thumbnails.

    I still think it’s an oversight that the theme automatically displays images at bigger than 100%, but this worked for me.
