Featured Image handling

I’d like to know if there is a way, short of editing the template or creating a child theme, to remove the Featured Image from post pages. I like to insert the image into the post content, so that users can click it and see a larger version, which they can’t do with the Featured Image.

I do love the way the Featured Image shows up in the excerpts on my home page. I tried it on 3 posts. It worked great on 2 of them, displaying the images in a reduced size to fit the layout, but on one of them it cropped the image instead, which I didn’t like. Is there any way to control that? What would cause that to happen?

I currently do not have any Featured Images set until I can resolve these two issues.
