When a new post is shared to my social media it does not share the featured image instead it displays my default featured image that’s in my media settings within WordPress.. Is this because I am using the plugin Featured image by url? and or even when I am using the standard upload for featured image within the post, why is it bypassing it.

    Hello,

    Thanks for reaching out.

We are not sure why this is happening. Can you deactivate all plugins except Yoast SEO and check if the problem persists?

Could this be an issue with jetpack as well?

    I will try suggested troubleshooting

the issue is inconsistent while sometimes it functions correctly and sometimes it goes to the default featured image.

    Any further suggestions?

Does this have anything to do with jetpack? I am without any direction here

We are not aware if JetPack could cause this issue. However, you can check by temporarily disable this plugin or Social settings on it. Besides this, there are multiple reasons why Facebook or other social media platforms may not display the image you selected. Could you please check the steps given in this article: Why doesn’t Facebook display an image?

Ok so let me be a little more clear of the issue…

When post are publicized to twitter and facebook it uses the image i set that if there isnt an image on the post.

However… each post does have a featured image and its not using thatExample….

I am looking for the solution to use the custom featured image instead of the default back up one when there isn’t one available ..

Also might i add that randomly it decides to function correctly but not at all common

    Hi,

If you’ve set a featured image using the standard WordPress functionality (and not one generated by another plugin), and it meets the resolution and size requirements mentioned here (The minimum width and height is 200 x 200 pixels while the maximum width and height we recommend is 2000 x 1600 pixels, and is less than 2mb in size.), we would expect that that would be the og:image that would output and would be the image that would be used for social sharing on Facebook and Twitter.

We’re trying to check on https://biggoldbelt.com/laura-post-interview-2021-otakon-2021/ and the og:image tag set when viewing the source code (https://i1.wp.com/biggoldbelt.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/BGB-Logo-2020-Black-1.png?fit=1500%2C1500&ssl=1) but the image doesn’t seem to be loading as expected. Could you check on this? Is this the image you’ve set in the featured image section when editing this post?

That’s the thing…. I have a default featured image/ back up incase a post doesn’t have a featured image.. but All post have featured imnaged and shouldnt be directing to “og:image tag set when viewing the source code (https://i1.wp.com/biggoldbelt.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/BGB-Logo-2020-Black-1.png?fit=1500%2C1500&ssl=1)” first. Shouldnt it be the secondary choice.

Evening look at the post https://biggoldbelt.com/laura-post-interview-2021-otakon-2021/ you can see it has a featured image… but when it post to twitter and facebook its not the photo it uses..

I am willing to give a temp account login to take a look if needed. I am really confused
The website it displays the correct featured image and everything its only when sharing to social media sites

So I spoke with Jetpack Tech Support and they said

Your site is using Yoast SEO to manage your social media images, not Jetpack. When you have Yoast enabled, Jetpack’s SEO features are automatically disabled.

Within Yoast SEO, you are setting the default social media graphic to be the one that you provided a link to. As a result, you will need to reach out to Yoast to get help with this issue as this issue does not pertain to Jetpack.

To me this means… that the Default image on the Social – Yoast SEO is second in priority picker and first must be Default featured image from the Settings -> Media Settings Menu.

I would need the Featured image from within the post menu option to be first as I think then it would display on twitter and Facebook properly when sharing.

I think it has something to do within the coding order or something

Whelp I figured it out, it totally a conflict between YoastSeo and Jetpack. I disable one and boom it works

Sorry for all the confusion on this

    Hi @biggoldbelt

We determine the og:image tag based on the following hierarchy and fallbacks:

Only populated when the page contains a valid image, based on the following hierarchy:

    • A user-defined image “Facebook image” in the Social tab of the Yoast meta box.
    • A user-defined “Featured image” for the page (only for posts).
    • A prominent image from the page’s content.
    • Yoast SEO WooCommerce only: Woo SEO adds one more image fallback: the first image in the Woo Product gallery.
    • The “Social default image” from the template in Search Appearance.
    • The site’s fallback/default social image (set at SEO > Social > Facebook > Default image).
    • We’re glad to hear you were able to resolve the issue and that the expected image is now showing. We’ll be setting this thread to resolved. If you have any other concerns with the Yoast SEO plugin, please do feel free to open a new topic. Thank you!
