Featured image not used when sharing

When you share a post on Facebook, or when Jetpack Publicize publishes a post to your Facebook page, Facebook crawls the page and looks for Open Graph meta tags in the head to build a complete post preview (with an image, title, description, …).

Jetpack automatically creates these Open Graph Meta tags for you unless you already use another Open Graph plugin, in which case we let the other plugin handle things.

Jetpack’s Open Graph Meta Tags will use your post’s Featured Image, but only if it’s big enough (200x200px).
If you do use our tags, and the featured image still doesn’t appear on Facebook, I’d recommend checking what Facebook sees when crawling your post thanks to the Facebook Debugger:

I ran the tool and the page scrape looked good and with the featured image. Could the fact that I ran the tool and scraped the page, make a difference? Or maybe the latest Jetpack update helped?

If you asked Facebook to scrape the page again, it will access your site once again, and may find Open Graph Meta Tags that were not there before.

Did you recently activate, configure, or remove plugins that may handle Open Graph Meta Tags?

Hi, I still had the problem last week and only update since then was Jetpack 3.9? to 4.0.2

We didn’t make any changes to Jetpack’s Open Graph Meta Tags in 4.0.2, so the problem is most likely linked to another plugin.

Could you check your site’s source code, and see if Jetpack is indeed managing your Open Graph tags? You’ll see the following if the tags are generated by Jetpack:

Maybe there was something else changed. Is there a log kept on all changes?

It might also be that Facebook couldn’t access your site at all, for any number of reason.

In any case, it might be worth publishing a new post now, to see if things are back to normal!
