• Hello- I’m using WP 3.5 and when i create a post and choose to upload an image to use as the “featured image” i’m limited in the libraries i can choose an image from. This is very limiting. I use NextGen galleries and would like to be able to use an already uploaded image in a gallery as opposed to having to upload yet another image that already exists.

My other issue is that if i choose the insert media button above the post edit content window, the window that popups up in this case does allow me to choose from a variety of locations. I go to the image i would like to use (which in my case is in a NextGen gallery) and then i see two options for the image “insert into post” and “featured image” – i choose to use as “featured image”. It then shows up as the thumbnail for the “featured image” and i publish my post. When i then visit my site i don’t see the image for my post. If i go back in to edit the post, i see the image associated to the “Featured image”. So it seems there is a disconnect.

I hope the questions are understandable, if needed i can give more detali/walk through of each question.

    Thanks,
    Greg

  • This is very limiting.

What you are suggesting is outside the remit of WordPress core. It is up to 3rd party plugin developers to leverage the core Media functionality in their plugins – not the other way around.

When i then visit my site i don’t see the image for my post.

What theme are you using? Where did you download it from?

I’m using Avada from theme-forest and i’m using the most current version. I already opened a case about this with them. The response i got was that the “Featured Image” is base WP core functionality and they haven’t touched that. They do allow additional featured images as part of a slide show option on posts.

The reason i suggest or question if what i’m seeing is normal is becuase i get varying results based on my entry point to setting the “Featured Image”. It isn’t consisten. While in editing a post i go to the widget to add “featured image” and i open to choose the image, it has a set of images from a single library or upload image…i have no other options of choosing a location (like NextGen). The theme creator has with the other featured images they built in to the theme selecting images from all kinds of places including 3rd party like NextGen. It is only the default “Featured Image” that is “limiting” – to me from what i’m currently seeing (opinion).

The other interesting part is that if i choose the insert media icon above the edit post content block….Which i’m pretty sure is WordPress core and not theme created, it launches a window that allows me to choose from many different locations – which is great! But when i select my image and then set it to “featured image” – which i believe is wordpress core. it sets it correctly, but then it doesn’t display for my posts as thumbnails. But going back in to “edit” the post i see the image set for “Featured Image”.

I’m only asking if i by selecting “Featured Image” in these two different ways should i see different locations of images to choose from?

I do have a follow up question with the theme creator to see if based on WP3.5 if something in the core changed that they need to update for displaying the image on the front side of the theme. I will see what they say….

    Thanks,
    Greg

maybe this will help to explain what i see…

    When “editing” a post.

“Set Featured Image” widget takes me to a screen that has a title “Set Featured Image” and only has two options “Upload Files” and “Media Library” no other options to choose from.

Clicking the “Add Media” button above the edit post content block takes me to a page that is for “Insert Media”. This option shows me Insert Media, Create Gallery, Set Featured Image and then there is a seperator bar and i have additional Insert from URL, NextGEN Gallery, and FlexSlider. When i choose NextGEN Gallery, select my gallery and then “show” the image, i have two options listed for that image “Use as Featured Image” and “Insert into Post”. I choose “Use as Featured Image”. I close out of the window and then see that the Featured Image widget is set correctly. So, why the different ways in being able to choose my “Featured Image”?

But doing the “add media” method doesn’t get me a fully working solution as the front side of my pages don’t actually show this image as the “Featured Image” UNLESS it appears to come from the media library.

    Thanks,
    Greg

Yes – because the additional functionality you describe is being added by the theme – not WordPress core.

I’m jumping on the conversation if you don’t mind – i can’t find ‘featured image’ anywhere on the new 3.5..

@wymetto: It is impolite to interrupt another poster’s ongoing thread with a question of your own. It causes significant problems for the forum’s volunteers and prevents us from being able to track issues by topic. Please post your own topic.

    sorry – posting now

I can see that i’m not being clear in my describing what i’m seeing. I think it woudl be best if i created a YouTube video and then shared it. Is this a valid method of explaining an issue? If so, i will create one this evening and then post.

    Thanks,
    Greg
