    Hi guys,

I can set a .pdf as featured image manually, but cannot achieve the same via postie.
Is there a FAQ concerning my issue?

    Regards,
    Sandra

Setting a pdf as the featured image isn’t something that WordPress supports out of the box so you must be using another plugin to add this functionality. Which one are you using?

Oh sorry, I had thought it is implemented by now. A change in WordPress (creating an image from the first page of a .pdf automatically) – so I thought this is what is happening.

I set up two installation from scratch today. One with storefront and one with twenty nineteen and both times this is happening for me without a plugin.

Might be a script my webhost is running for me without my knowledge. I will ask them.

Thank you for your reply. Much appreciated.

Looks like you have to have some specific software on your server which I didn’t. I’ll install it and see if I can figure out what is possible.

I wasn’t able to find out which server specific software is doing this for me. I tried a different webhost and did the same with a blank install (storefront and twenty nineteen) and also without additional plugin, a featured image is created if I upload the .pdf manually to the post.

I was able to set a PDF as the featured image using the post editor after installing ghostscript and enabling imagick without installing any additional plugins.

As far as I can tell you have to re-upload the PDF to the featured image to get this to work in the editor as you can’t select a PDF from the media library when setting the featured image.

There seems to be a bit of WordPress magic going on with the first page images for PDFs as they are not listed in the media library, but they are in the uploads directory.

I could create an addon that would use the first page image as the featured image.

Do you ever have multiple pdf attachments or pdf and images? If so how should Postie choose the right one?

I do not have multiple attachments. Only one incoming email comes with a one page pdf attachment. Generally: If postie handled pdfs (the first page of the pdf) like images it will select the first page of the pdf as featured image if the .pdf was the first attachment?

I set up a free wordpress.com blog (standard English) and there the magic is not happening. I cannot manually upload a .pdf to featured image.
Now I assume it might be the language kit. Sadly I wasn’t able to figure out how to install the language kit on wordpress.com yet to check.

If I understand this article correctly: https://make.www.ads-software.com/core/2016/11/15/enhanced-pdf-support-4-7/ imagick is a core function which once enabled can be accessed. It must either be build into my language pack or my installation packs and by coincidence every installation pack I ever used on our 4 different webhosts since 4.7 has this pre-enabled.

Thanks for investigating this with me!
