featured image permalink

Hi, I have a question regarding featured image permalinks. Currently, for an image to be featured, it has to be in the wordpress media library. Lets say, this is my image url:
https://mydomain.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/myImage.jpg

I do not like the permalink structure for the media images. Also I do not want to use wordpress media as I prefer to use my own ftp program.

Instead of choosing wordpress media images as featured images, I want to choose my own image from a different url (shorter url example https://mydomain.com/image.jpg).

Is it possible for the featured image (shown on homepage) to be from my own shorter url instead?

I am currently using a child theme.
