Featured image problems

If I select a Featured Image for a blog post, it shows up as a cropped image at the top of the blog post, which looks weird. If I remove the featured image then there is no longer an image associated with the post for a list of posts, i.e. category. Is there a way around this so I can have a larger image at the top of my post yet still have a featured image for a category list of posts?
