Featured images being automatically resized

    I have set the thumbnail size for featured images at 225px width and 150px height in the media settings. The featured images we’re using are all 225px x 150px. Today we’ve uploaded a new image of these proportions, set it as featured image as normal, but wordpress is automatically resizing the image to 225px x 125px.

    I’ve tried deleting the image, re-uploading it, double checking the proportions are correct in the functions.php, but still the image is being automatically resized.

    Any ideas?

  • Unless you ticked “Crop to exact dimensions” in Settings -> media, WP will resize the image proportionally. which means that all of your uploaded images must have a width:height ratio of 1:.67 The latest image must have had a w:h ratio of 1: .55

    The featured image I was originally using is 225px by 150px in size, so cropping the image wasn’t necessary. I selected “Full Size (225 × 150)” in the size options, but WordPress automatically resized the image to 125px in height.

    I’ve managed to resolve the issue by using a larger version of the image and selecting the thumbnail option, but don’t understand why it was automatically altering the dimensions of the original correctly sized image.

    Have you tried:

    – deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s).

    – switching to the Twenty Ten theme to rule out any theme-specific problems.

    – resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems.

    Another thought – what was the dpi on that image? Was it higher than 90dpi?

    The dpi was 72, I’ve managed to resolve this for now, it’s the only time we’ve had this problem with the featured images, if the problem arises again I’ll try the other things you’ve suggested.
