Featured Images now letterbox shapr

On a site featured images have been shrunk into a small letterbox shape.

I beleive that this is a consequence of editors selecting a full size image as a featured image and the WP Smush is having an adverse effect on these smaller thumbnails.

Is there a way around this?

I guess the problem here is, you selected the wrong size for featured image, and you’ve set this particular image size to be cropped to exact dimensions, and hence it ignores the scale/resolution of image.

WP Smush has nothing to do with it, you need to check your Media Settings, and featured images you’ve set for the post.
