I was hoping there was a way to make the featured image a video, regardless of the theme.

This shouldn’t be a theme issue. There should be a way to let featured images use a video rather than an image. I can’t be the fist person to want to do this. In Drupal, you use ddblock and add an image or a video. There should be a way to do the same with WP.

So if I had a different theme, I could upload videos and images using the featured image option? I’ll just start looking for a different theme then. Thanks.

No – just images. And this assumes that the theme supports Post Thumbnails.

If your videos are individual posts, then you can have a Featured Image for each video post. The featured image can then be used in your slider.

If your videos ARE all individual posts, I suggest checking out the Video Thumbnails plugin by Sutherland Boswell. Works like a charm for me.
