To be honest, in one quick look it does not look like a site based on soccer. I guess it just needs a little more casual approach in terms of graphics. Moreover the header image is not helping at all. But I can see that you are a very consistent about posting your stories. Which is a very good thing. And probably that is the reason you are getting stronger in the search results ( I have got a very good grasp of seo optimization, trust me).
Another thing you may need to do is make your post excerpt images clickable, because images are most likely clicked by visitors first. I am glad you have decided to stay away from too many tags. It does not help at all in my experience. Instead is a first cause of diluting your content power.
Red and white is the color to go for.. Everything else is fantastic.
