Few Boldgrid Questions
-
1. Why is when I run the BG backup that the archive is empty when I open the zip?
2. I have been getting a lot of false positives, telling me that back up has failed to be created when in fact it does. Any explanation to these notices?

Hi @brockpaston, thanks for posting the very first question for BoldGrid Backup! Unfortunately it sounds like a few bugs, but I think we can help.
1. Why is when I run the BG backup that the archive is empty when I open the zip?
In my testing of the BoldGrid Backup plugin, I’ve never actually ran into this scenario. To help troubleshoot, I hope you can provide us with a few things:
1. How are you generating the backup?
Are you manually creating the backup, or is this an automatic backup?2. What is your server setup like?
You can go to Dashboard > Tools > Site Health > Info > Copy site info to clipboard to get this info.3. How are you opening the zip?
Are you viewing the zip within the “View Details” section of the dashboard, or are you downloading the zip to your desktop and then opening it with a program like 7-zip?2. I have been getting a lot of false positives, telling me that back up has failed to be created when in fact it does. Any explanation to these notices?
1. Can you supply us with the exact error message?
2. Is this something you can easily replicated, or does it happen sporadically?
Hey @bwmarkle, Following up for your questions.
Are you viewing the zip within the “View Details” section of the dashboard, or are you downloading the zip to your desktop and then opening it with a program like 7-zip?1. I am running the backups manually from the backup wizard in the BG Backup dashboard.
2. Here is the information from the site health in the WP Dashboard…

3. I am accessing the file using achiever(MacOS) and or winrar(Win10) after downloading to my local machine. There have been times where it will be a 45 MB download with nothing inside.
In regards to the false positives,
1. Can you supply us with the exact error message?
2. Is this something you can easily replicated, or does it happen sporadically?
1. I usually get the message, Something went wrong. Backup failed”. I checked for logs to see if It gave a more detailed report nothing was logged though.
2. The error arises sporadically. Not all the time. But enough to raise concern. I do usually get the error some when the pop up shows the progress of the backup going on, (The one you can hide when you first start the backup manager.)
Thanks @brockpaston for the info. We’ll do some testing and get back to you with more info soon.

On a quick side note… It does sound strange that you’re downloading a 45MB file, yet it shows as empty on your desktop. That same backup file, if you view it within WordPress Dashboard > BoldGrid Backup > Backup Archives > View Details, does the Backup Browser show any files? Screenshot of backup browser as reference: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/5925563/61242281-4c6deb00-a713-11e9-987f-042216b334d3.png
Thank you @brockpaston for providing more information. I was not able to replicate the issue in a similar environment created using the information provided. As per our direct communication today, we will be waiting for a copy of the backup archive in question.
Please reply to let us know if you experience any issues using the Backup Browser feature on one of the Backup Archive Details pages.
Also, please try to open the archive file with a newer utility such as 7-zip.
Hi @brockpaston
I just wanted to chime in and mention we’re still here and still want to help. If you can give us an update on @joemoto last response, we can troubleshoot further.
