File Permissions

    Hi all,
    Just managed to get wordpress running (the errors in step 3 of setup are bogus right?)!
    Could anyone tell me what should be the appropriate permission levels for all the WP main directory and everything under it? I want to give sufficient permissions for wp to run but not anymore…
    Also, how do I can I (or should I) redirect my main URI (e.g. https://www.website.com) to the directory where I installed WP (www.website.com/wp) ??

  • 1- if you installed and everything is ok, you don’t have to chmod anything… the only thing that had to be 777 was the wp-config.php …
    2- this detail is related to your own apache installation… WP can’t deal with that… or instead of placing things in a /wp/ directory, place them idrectly in the root dir…

    there is a cache file which needs special permission.
    plus if u want to edit the index/hacks/HTA file from the backend, these files need writable permissions too.

    Thanks for the suggestions.
    Actually, I had problems with installing when i just uploaded (Think many of the files were 644), so i did a chmod 777 on the entire thing. WP redid permissions for some of the files during the install, so I guess those are ok, but I was wondering about the rest? Like the wp-includes directory for example… (and all the files within) What’s the difference between directory and file permissions anyway? What do I have to keep at 777 and what can i restrict to a lower level?
