As mentioned at this link, there are a set of files related to Tablepress that are stored in the wp-content folder. I urge you to put them into a single tablepress folder within wp-content. Or, is there any way you could put them into the wp-cache folder?

When we are backing up a site or reviewing for security issues, it always creates a question. We have to go back and look at notes to discover that yes, there are several different files laying around loose in that folder, and that it’s okay. Just a little time-consuming.

If we delete them, will they get re-generated? If so, then it seems like the wp-content/cache/tablepress folder would be a great location.

My feeling is that if every plugin started putting loose files in the wp-content folder, it would get messy very quickly. Elementor, for example, puts its files into the wp-uploads folder, but at least they are consolidated into one folder called “elementor”. Other plugins do this as well:

    • Custom CSS/JS plugin
    • Ithemes Security
    • WP All Import/Export
    • Contact Form 7 (its uploads)

So if every one of those plugins started storing things “loose” in the wp-content folder, we could end up with hundreds of stray files, and in this day and age of being security conscious, it is nice to be able to know at-a-glance what is going on.

    Hi,

thanks for your post, and sorry for the trouble.

I know what you mean, and I have thought about this a bit now. In hindsight, it would indeed have been better to choose a different folder some 12 years ago, or to put these into a subfolder. However, due to concerns regarding backwards-compatibility, I will not be changing the location of these files at this time. The risk of potential issues with saving to other locations not working is just too high. While this has certainly been improving across hosting companies, there are still many where creating folders fails due to file permissions and similar.

And yes, if you delete the files, they will be regenerated as soon as you save the “Custom CSS” again, on the “Plugin Options” screen. In the meantime, that “Custom CSS” would be loaded via an inline <style> tag.

If the files in that particular location really are a permanent problem, I suggest that you look into using the filter hooks that I mentioned and linked to in that other forums thread. You can use those to change the location of the files to somewhere else on your server.

    Best wishes,
    Tobias
