Filter button in posts admin screen returns no results

The filter button at the top of the posts admin screens never returns any results, whether I’m trying to filter by date, category, user or anything else for that matter. My site has lots of posts, categories and different custom post types so not being able to filter is becoming a real hindrance.

This has been an issue with my site for a while. I have upgraded and deactivated all plugins to no effect. I’m surprised I can’t find any reference to other people having the same problem anywhere! Is anyone familiar with this issue?
