• I’ve had a custom hat website for many years, and am now creating a new WordPress website for the business that will be more mobile user friendly.

My business is custom millinery, so I do not have a website full of hats with prices listed with ready-made hats on shelves. My customers contact me for Derby hats, wedding hats, etc., and based on their needs we collaborate on a custom design. Then I price it and they pay me directly (not through the website).

So I do not need a traditional Ecommerce website with shopping cart included.

What I am looking for is a theme that is elegant and professional, that will allow me to showcase my hats (several 100) with descriptions and several views for each hat.

I have been looking at many themes, and wondered if anyone had recommendations for themes that include a Portfolio option?

The other possibility would be to download a Portfolio plugin out of the many that are available.

I would love some suggestions for either of these options. Please keep in mind that my website creation skills are just getting started, so I need theme and/or portfolio plugin suggestions that are straightforward and easy to learn.

    Thank you in advance!
    Sally

    Hi Sally,

If you are looking in the repo ( www.ads-software.com/themes ) you won’t find one that creates a portfolio. You will find some themes that have support for portfolio plugins. I know that Jetpack does provide the capability of having portfolio items. There are also a few plugins available for that.

As for looking for a theme. There is no clear-cut answer. Try them out. Install, preview and decide. What I will say though is don’t get too attached to the colors since they can be easily changed rather look for a layout that works for your needs. ??

Hi Joe, thanks for all the information and support!

I decided to go ahead and check out a few of the Portfolio plugins out there – namely, NextGEN, Envira Gallery and Nimble.

Not being a tech savvy person, I am having real trouble trying to get any instructions for them. I have had several blogs for years, and used the WordPress.COM media gallery without any trouble. These gallery/portfolio plugins, however, do not seem to come with much “how to use” information.

For example, it’s easy enough to figure out how to insert a simple gallery into a Page with any of the plugins I have activated. The trouble I am having is in trying to figure out how to create a gallery of, let’s say, 10-15 hats (thumb size) on a particular Page. And then, to have each of those individual hats on that Page become clickable links to a series of different hat views (so that customers can see how the hat looks from different angles). So far, all I can achieve is the 10-15 hats on the Page, and each one clicks open to a larger screen version of itself. I have tried all kinds of links, creating sub-galleries, etc. but nothing so far has worked.

It doesn’t seem like this would be too much for a gallery plugin to be able to do – unless… for even something this simple, I would have to upgrade and pay for something that does more?

Any suggestions anyone might have regarding easy-to-use gallery/portfolio plugins would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks
    Sally
