I’ve run in to some incorrect licensing issues on images used throughout my website. Pictures that have been used but not correctly attributed. The site has MANY images and years of posts. There are images used on other pages as well that are not posts.

How can I look at my media files listing and know where on the site each image is being used? Many of my images are used in various posts/pages, etc throughout the site and I need to either remove, replace or edit the attribution. Is there a thorough way of figuring out where each image is being used?

Some of the images I have corrected on, for example, 3 pages where it was used in 3 separate instances and even years. Only to find later that it was used on even more pages… I can’t be sure that I’m finding every place the image is used!

    Any suggestions?!

You can get the image’s filename from the Media Library by opening the image and selecting the File URL to the right.

You can then search for that filename (example.jpg) in your Dashboard’s Posts, Pages, and Comments section.

    Hi there,

You can also try in Media Library the List View button and check the Uploaded to column to see what page is the image attached to.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be effective. I have pictures on my site that I cannot seem to locate in the Media library.

When I click on them in the post, I can right click on the image and select “save as…”. This brings up the dialogue box to save the image and it gives the name that it is already saved as. However, there are several pictures that are definitely there on my site, but when I search for that title in the Media Library it pulls nothing up!!!

The media library is a catalogue, not a directory listing, it’s only aware of files that are uploaded through it (Media > Add New, or adding media inside a post or page).

If you uploaded files externally of the media library, you’ll need to use a plugin like https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/add-from-server/ to add them to the media library.

Do you mean that there is no way in WordPress to find a listing of all your media files?!

So I’m understanding that the best way then it to use the above plugin to make such a list? Will it help me to see not only all media on my site but also where each one is currently being used?

    I will try it!

Right now the media library even tells me that photos are still attached to certain articles and posts when they have been removed from that post.

Is there some sort of tutorial that you can recommend for managing media on wordpress sites? The more I dig into it, the more questions and help needed!

Like I said, “it’s only aware of files that are uploaded through it (Media > Add New, or adding media inside a post or page).”

If you uploaded files to /wp-content/uploads/ external of WordPress, like via FTP, SFTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, use https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/add-from-server/ to add them to WordPress’s media library.

Will it help me to see not only all media on my site but also where each one is currently being used?

No, I’m not aware of any way to do that. The Media Library records what post or page a media file is attached to by uploading it while writing or editing that post or page.
