• Now that I’ve installed WP on my web host, I want to find a theme with particular features – but some of those aren’t in the filter and some that are don’t always seem to filter 100%. I am taking a website design that sat idle for 2-3 years and going to build it in WP because WP seems to have the features we need.

    Features I want:

    1. Custom image in the header (actually an image map of the categories)
    2. left sidebar with categories (we think)
    3. Each category on a separate page

So, when I search for left-sidebar sometimes I get right ones too. Custom header seems to work OK. The last one I can’t seem to filter on at all, even though I thought I saw it in a Google search which I now can’t seem to replicate.

last question: If I change ‘The Loop’ or have multiple loops to get what I want, am I creating a new theme and do I need to name it, etc.?

  • I think the default one already have everything you needed? For the separate page for category, I think you can work around that with Custom Menu.

Yes as mentioned above, the categories per page is part of WP – see:

One thing you should do if you are going to make modifications to theme files is to first create a Child Theme so that your changes are not lost when the theme is updated:

Almost anything can be done via customizations in most themes, so don’t worry too much about finding a theme that fits perfectly to your needs – look for the basics. I’d also suggest using one that is actively supported, and recently updated.
