Firefox Extension Release: WordPress Helper

  • Hey peeps,

    I made a small Firefox Extension for me and hope it’s helping some of you aswell.

    The Firefox extension WordPress Helper helps you working with WordPress by providing useful help and tools. The extension eases the fast and simple access to develop-relevant pages of the WordPress Codex. So you always have all the necessary help at your fingertips. It’s also possible to search after strings of text that is currently marked. Furthermore it’s possible to easily switch to WordPress backend of current site.

    I just released a new version of my WordPress Helper plugin for Firefox. New features are:

    • Update Notification on new WordPress versions
    • Website Profiles and access to WP-BE pages with your profiles
    • Custom Shortcuts
    • Various preference settings

    With the new update notification it is possible to get notified while you’re browing whenever there’s a new WP version available. If there is, a dialog like this pops up, displaying release notes. Furthermore there’s some version infos displayed in the statusbar (adjustable). And some more features, amongst a bunch of new options.

    The Screenshots may help you to get a small impression of the plugin.

    Hope it does help some of you. ?? Feedback desired.

    This is a great tool – love it. I have only one problem with the depth of the Backend.

    Which option do I have to chose if my WordPress installation is in a folder on my server which points to myaddress.com and there the actual blog is in a subfolder /blog?

    I tried all the existing options but none worked.

    Why dont you just access myaddress.com and choose the second option (“2nd level”) to switch to /blog/wp-admin?

    That’s what I did, still not working. But here’s my problem – my subfolder isn’t actually named blog. Could this be a problem?

    Let’s consider you’re browsing through your site mydomain.com which isnt the blog, right? You cant access your WP backend that way since the plugin cant guess your blog subfolder, which could be blog/, lala/ or bush/, you know. Where should it know from? ?? The ‘switch to WP backend’ works when you’re browsing your actual blog itself like mydomain.com/blogfolder/, or if you’d browse mydomain.com/blogfolder/2007/10/26/text-entry/ .. then you’d have to choose the “2nd level” option to access mydomain.com/blogfolder/wp-admin/ (where ‘mydomain.com’ would be root level, and ‘blogfolder/’ 2nd level).

    I really don’t want to bother you but I can’t get it to work. So I see that with domain.com and the blog in the subfolder /wordpress I have to chose the “1 level – domain.com/blog/wp-admin” and put just domain.com in the profile link – right?

    But somehow the add-on doesn’t add the subfolder to the directory when I want to access the dashbord through the plugin. It works if I put domain.com/wordpress in the profile link but then I can’t access the website through the plugin.

    But there’s obviously a small misunderstanding. The website profiles and the ‘switch to WP backend’ context menu entry are two different things at all.

    The ‘switch to WP backend’ context menu entry reads the url of the currently open website and uses it to open the wp backend, depending on what ‘wordpress backend level’ you’ve chosen and depending on the url currently opened. So, if you’re browsing domain1.com/blog, the context menu click opens domain1.com/blog/wp-admin/; if youre browsing domain2.com/blog it’s gonna open domain2.com/blog/wp-admin/ and so on. It’s more dynamical than the profiles thing; they dont even know each other… technically. *gg

    The website profiles are just of interest when using the statusbar menu, not the ‘switch to WP backend’ link.

    In short: The context menu entry ‘switch to WP backend’ opens the dashboard of the page currently opened (if it’s a blog). The quick links (like “Dashboard” in statusbar) do use your defined profile urls and those urls only).

    Since WP2.5 is about to be released, I just updated my little plugin to version 0.8. The click tree has been updated to include 2.5 links to the codex.

    New in this version are the Editor’s Choice Links. These are links that are fetched from a remote XML file; this makes it possible to update these links more frequently without having to update the extension itself. Everyone else can suggest helpful links, of course. ??

    More than that, a small statusbar icon now indicates whether the currently displayed website runs on WordPress or not.

    The plugin is compatible to Firefox 3, btw.
