• I am happy to learn that WP is promoting ‘alternative browserS’ but something tells me that WP is promoting only a single alternative to Internet Explorer.

    While firebadger is a good browser, Opera is by far the fastest and the most secure of them all (Opera still has a O on the secunia warnnings)… Why is opera being shunned here.

  • I don’t understand why you say this. The browse happy site is currently showing 4 alternative browsers to choose from.

    WordPress = open source
    Firefox = open source

    Alternatives are a Good Thing™, and the more of them the merrier we users be, however there will probably always be a slight (and good natured) bias towards any open source ones around these parts. But shun Opera? I don’t see that.

    It certainly doesn’t seem like Opera is shunned.

    Maybe injinuity is referring to the “Get Firefox” icon/link at the bottom of all the admin pages? Just a guess…

    I’m sure that’s what he meant, but if we can’t shun Opera, then we can’t shun any other [non-IE] browsers, can we? Including one small icon for Firefox in the admin pages is far more economical than including icons for Firefox, Opera, Safari, Mozilla, Netscape, OmniWeb, Camino, Konqueror, K-Meleon, Galeon, and Epiphany.

    In the mean time, Browse Happy should be seen as WordPress’ official stance on the issue. And, it will probably be linked to instead of Firefox in future WP releases.

    Hello Folks,

    My comments were not intended at browse happy but rather at wordpress, which

    a. has a link to firefox
    b. categoricall states in the blog, ” Browse Happy is a site dedicated to educating people about browser alternatives that will give them a better online experience. Wea€?ve promoted Firefox for a long time within our administration interface, this will allow us to expand our promotion to cover other excellent browsers as well.”

    I just had a bad feeling about seeing all the firebadger promotion in here that I for a minute got a little angry at not having opera mentioned anywhere in W.P, my mistake anyways for being so blunt… thank you all and God bless.

    I think the point made was this:

    WordPress is OpenSource
    Firefox is OpenSource

    WordPress supports the OpenSource alternative

    Opera is not OpenSource (as far as I know, and even comes with an ad flavour which..is nasty). IE is not OpenSource so you don’t see it here, not sure about Camino, Netscape (does that even count) or Safari.

    It’s an interesting point, but even for my own clarification – is it that WP is supporting the OS projects of web browsers or is recommending Firefox above others in their own opinion? FF is avilable on all platforms I believe so the latter would make more sense.

    I assumed it was because of the Open Source model and the striving to implement the w3c standards as they should be done, rather than as m$ wanted.

    Strictly speaking, Opera is adware.

    Here’s an idea:

    How about you build a great CMS like WordPress yourself and then you can add as many promotions for Opera as you please. Until then I suggest you just simply thank the devs of WordPress for their great Open Source, ad-free, W3C compliant CMS.

    Camino’s open source. And better than safari, IMO.

    But who cares what WordPress supports? A browser is a browser is a browser. I use Firefox, but I didn’t like the firefox link in my WP Admin. Not because it’s Firefox and not something else…but because it was something I didn’t want to look at.

    Big deal. If they were 100% IE, I wouldn’t care…unless it affected the way the product worked…

    well if it was 100% IE it MIGHT affect the way the product works, since it would only except basic css1 elements and allow flawed code…probably :p

    Well, if they included a “View Your WordPress site” with the 4 alternatives, happybrowser.com would most likely shut down!
