• Theme TWENTY FIFTEEN. Designed by WordPress. Hosted on my own server.

As someone who used to code by hand and relied on Dreamweaver and a server to put pages on the web, I like WordPress’s otherwise simplicity, but I am quite disturbed and annoyed by this theme’s refusal to allow width changes and font changes to the header. I think it’s embarrassing to the user and embarrassing of WordPress to not have built that into the Theme. And here is how I really feel about it.

    https://bigcitylittlehomestead.ca/blog/2016/06/16/apologies-for-menu-side/

Everyone is stumped for time and I should be able to build on my own site and use my old knowledge without being made to feel stupid by the people who think this should turn into an income for them or else make me go back and invest even an hour for what is a simple thing (to the moderators: no, sending me to help pages to learn how to do it myself isn’t good enough). I just can’t fathom the logic in this particular restriction of use! I haven’t got 2-3 hours right now to go step by step through CSS and this template’s back end, and I’m not happy about being required to hire someone just for a quick job to make up for some template developer treating a user with disdain. Which is what the moderator just did for “offering to pay” when the fact is that I wasn’t offering to pay, I was expressing the criteria under which I would be WILLING TO that DID NOT include this obstacle (*did you even read my post?*).

My REQUEST: WordPress fixing the Twenty Fifteen template so that the USER can change the fonts and sizes and weights and alter the width of the Header (left) column. Without additional investment in time, learning how to do a sub template of some sort.

    Hi Janerette,

Twenty Fifteen is extremely customizable, but it is a free starter theme, meaning it won’t have all the flips and switches that it seems like you’re looking for. To have those built in, you’ll either need to invest in a premium theme, use one of a number of free plugins to add that functionality, or, as a web designer, use a child theme which takes less than ten minutes to set up.

In actuality, though, you don’t need to go that far. Using Simple Custom CSS, you get a new CSS area under appearance where you can make most of your changes.

Now that you’ve added the custom CSS sheet, you can just use your CSS knowledge from Dreamweaver days to make changes. Use a browser tool like Chrome’s inspect, drill down to the correct CSS class, and make some modifications – it’s not that bad when you get started.

This is the fact of self hosting and managing your site. If you want to modify themes then not every option can be changed with a field. We all have to learn new things as time goes on, because the internet is constantly changing – WordPress is much more advanced than Dreamweaver. To thrive as a developer, you have to keep learning and that’s why there’s a ton of learning material out there, from Codecademy to Treehouse to Lynda, you can definitely find quick resources to get you going. What you’re asking is for a developer to spend their time, for free, to make changes to your site. You won’t have much luck there.

Good luck with your site and www.ads-software.com!

Have you considered using another theme such as https://www.ads-software.com/themes/customizr/ ?
