    What are your hosting limitations?
    If it is disk space it will not help, because when i should make connection to external sites, i will import the photos from there, so they will be on your server anyway.

    My limitations are the # of files (inodes) and also several technical ones like php entry processes.

    If your problem is only the max number of files in a directory, you can run Table VIII-A10 to convert …/wp-content/uploads/wppa/ and …/wp-content/uploads/wppa/thumbs/ to tree structures with no folder having more than 200 intries ( 100 subfolders an 100 image files )
