Answers to a few questions could help narrow down a potential cause:

    • Where is your site hosted?
    • Does WordPress prompt you for FTP, SSH, or other type of login details in order to install plugins and themes?
    • What active plugins are on the site?

    Thanks for the quick response.

    Where is your site hosted?:
This I cannot answer immediately I would have to ask the person responsible for this at my company.

Does WordPress prompt you for FTP, SSH, or other type of login details in order to install plugins and themes?
I’m not getting prompted for any of these details by wordpress.

What active plugins are on the site?

I could keep asking questions all day to try to figure out the issue, but I think the only way to really find out what is happening on the site is for me to have access to the site and run some tests. Is this possible?

If so, I’m @chrisjean on Twitter. I’m following @michaelgobbers now. You can direct message me your email address so that we can pass details privately.

    Is there a fix yet?
I have the exact same problem using the same versions too.
This site is hosted at hostgator.
    Any tips much appreciated.
Thanks for the great plugin. Works great on my other sites.

I have what appears to be the same issue. Before I even get to the “Destination folder already exists.” message though I see this error at the FTP credentials screen.

Unable to initialize WP_Filesystem. Will not proceed with the upgrade.

WordPress version 3.9.1 and Plugin version is 1.0.4

I have the exact same problem using the same versions too.

I can upload, install and upgrade themes and plugin.
but if I use your very useful plugin appears the same issue:
“Unable to initialize WP_Filesystem. Will not proceed with the upgrade.”

    Is there a fix yet?

Same error, this time with a plugin. Say ‘yes’, it is an upgrade, but it fails with the ‘Destination folder already exists’.

Plugin 1.0.4, WP 4.0, webserver can write to the filesystem, so no need for ftp credentials.

    Active:

Easy Theme and Plugin Upgrades – Version 1.0.4
Event Espresso – Version 4.4.0.p (it was this I was trying to upgrade)
    Maintenance – Version 2.2
Weaver II Theme Extras – Version 2.2.10
    wpuntexturize – Version 1.5.1

When I go down the ‘deactivate and delete the plugin, then upload the new version’ route – saying “no”, it’s not an upgrade – it works, but I get the following message:

“The Easy Theme and Plugin Upgrades plugin was unable to handle requests for this upgrade. Unfortunately, this setup may be incompatible with the plugin.”

Having this error also, trying to upgrade the Covert Store Content Plugin To Version 1.6. It says it is compatible with your upgrade tool, so maybe it is something with my server?

    https://covertcontent.com/store/plugin_update/std/update.html

“Unable to initialize WP_Filesystem. Will not proceed with the upgrade.”

“The Easy Theme and Plugin Upgrades plugin was unable to handle requests for this upgrade. Unfortunately, this setup may be incompatible with the plugin.”

Trying to use FTPS (SSL) to upgrade with password. Can you please follow me @fratdeals on twitter?

For anyone that has to provide FTP, SFTP, or other kinds of credentials when installing plugins or themes, upgrading will only be supported if you update your wp-config.php file to contain these credentials. The details on how to do this can be found here.

I should note that I am unable to provide assistance on properly setting these settings as the required settings are specific to the configuration of your hosting account. You can test the settings by trying to install a new plugin or theme. If you are prompted for credentials, the settings were not correct.

I’ve tried to find ways to bypass this over the years, but so far, I’ve been unable to. I just came up with some new ideas that I’ll try out today. Hopefully I’ll have good news to report soon.
