• Hi,
I know that this topic was discussed lots of times, but those threads are mostly closed and basically the answer as I understand it is “it’s too complicated for users”.
Which seems confusing to say the least.
Being an artist, media management essentially is the core of content management for me and lack of hierarchy option is the only reason I cannot port my blog to WordPress, though I’d like to for a couple years already.

    Why tags don’t work:
    1. Hard to assign for homogenous content and even harder to remember after.
    2. Need to use another search parameter anyway as general tags still return way too much content.

    Why year/month doesn’t work:
    1. Too broad. Even specific day is too broad as posts may be distributed unevenly, concentrating in single day.
    2. Months are listed in single column, without hierarchy. Two years of content list is too long.

    And most importantly:
Without folders it’s impossible to select, recategorize, delete or insert into post a whole folder. And it’s unpractical to do such things to 30 files manually on regular basis, especially considering one has to find them personally first if they’re not recent ones.

Which in turn renders beautiful and intuitive “media library” into theoretical possibility to change or find something if one really wants rather than a management tool.
I guess hence the name “media library” not “manager”. But it’s a strange lack of functionality still.

As for “folders are too complicated to use” argument – nobody pushes anyone to use folders if they don’t want to. Though I can’t see how a concept of folder might be complicating.

Hope nothing seems too harsh – wasn’t meant to. WordPress is a great CMS, it’s just that it would be nice to see more friendliness towards variability of use.

    Thanks.

  • I don’t think we should depend on an external, often outdated plugin (7 months at the moment of this writing) for such a basic -and needed- functionality.

I read Matt Mullenweg saying just some days or weeks ago that WP is mainly used as a CMS nowadays, so I think a CMS needs a better media library (imho, if we want to call it a library. Think of a real library in which the books are not organised by sections, only by years and months ?? )

I would say that a good fraction of the 72 million WP sites as of today would appreciate this feature.

    well said robert

I find it absurd that calls for this functionality are met with “it’s too complicated for users’.

Indeed, I wonder if there are people not familiar with folder tree concept. Do they blog? Basic phones have it.

Not sure if there’s point to do so, but I posted an idea:

Edit: turns out there was one like that already, but it was turned down 6 months ago:
    https://www.ads-software.com/ideas/topic/media-library-folders

And I guess this one is a nail in the coffin: “most people don’t need to organize images by folder”.

More like most people can easily survive without such feature, if we include schoolkid bloggers etc. But then again – there is a lot of other features that could be dropped if we go by that ideology.

Great – the idea topic was closed because “This topic already exists.”, while the original one is closed too. What a nice way to “ask” to shut up.

If you require assistance then, as per the Forum Welcome, please post your own topic.

This 10 month old topic references an old version of WordPress.
