  • I can’t find it now, but I think I’ve seen it said that it’s called Dante.

Any ideas where to get that font from for free? ;o)

Dante is a commercial font. If you get it for free, then you are not using an “official” version of the font.
Fonts and font copyright are going to be the “next big thing” after music sharing has dropped off of the copyright enfringement radar.

Don’t think font copyrights will become such a biggie…
there are loads of fonts that look so similar. music cant be copied without direct influenze. fonts can be…

High quality fonts are works of art, and should be paid for as thus. I bought Dante that we use around here, and you can buy lots of really great fonts at https://myfonts.com .

?? very true. i heard a rumor abt the amount MS paid for comic sans and i was shell shocked.
But to expect people who pirate softwares, to pay for their favorite fonts… Ummm… very unlikely.

    Sushubh,
I for one, have no expectations of other people. I have no control over them. I can sleep at night with a clear conscience, though, knowing that everything on my computer has been paid for. Other people don’t care about this, and would even go as far as to say that I’m an idiot for NOT pirating stuff.
    Craig.

Well… in my honest opinion, I hate paying for software! Paying for a font is just something I wont do (Im just being honest!). I hope that Open Source Fonts will be the next big thing, I mean, people pay enough to do ordinary things with their computer, now when people want a great font they have to yet again pay for it? I say that M$ should provide its users with more fonts, and more of everything for the price of their buggy software!
I dont want to move off topic here… but let me just say a little something about music copyrights. I download music, as does every other person in the entire world who knows how to do so… I generally download music to see if I like it or not, If I dont, I delete the file and dont look back… but if I do I go and buy the music. Why? Because I like owning things, I like owning the CD with the case and booklet etc etc.

NM: U are an inspiration not an idiot if everything on ur system has been paid for. ??

Font’s take time to create, and should be paid for, but not the exorbant amount being charged for some of them. I have seen some fonts that cost as much as Photoshop! That is just highway robbery. No font is worth that much. By the way, since you paid for the Dante font, would you mind using that to make a few buttons for WP? I like the current one I have, but I would like the blue WP on it. I would like to have some color on the button.

Sure I could put some stuff together. What’d you have in mind?

In my opinion, both MS and Apple provide plenty of high quality free fonts with the basic OS. Many additional software packages add even more fonts. The fonts some people pay for (and should pay for) are specialty fonts created by artists to give an application (website, print brochure, movie title, etc.) a bit of distinctness. If these fonts were free, we’d see nothing but copycat clones. Remember the early days of the web, when every damn site under the sun used Comic Sans MS? God, I hate that font! So, I like that the WP site has a distinctive font that everybody and his/her dog are using.

The Gnome project went through a lot of effort to obtain fonts that can be freely distributed and altered.

Creating good fonts requires tremendous effort and skill, making this gift from Bitstream very valuable. Here is an excerpt from Bitstream’s generous license:
“Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of the fonts accompanying this license (“Fonts??) and associated documentation files (the “Font Software??), to reproduce and distribute the Font Software, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, merge, publish, distribute, and/or sell copies of the Font Software, and to permit persons to whom the Font Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions:
“The above copyright and trademark notices and this permission notice shall be included in all copies of one or more of the Font Software typefaces.
“The Font Software may be modified, altered, or added to, and in particular the designs of glyphs or characters in the Fonts may be modified and additional glyphs or characters may be added to the Fonts, only if the fonts are renamed to names not containing either the words “Bitstream?? or the word “Vera??.”

Uhm, I didn’t realize it was compleatly commercial. (Some people do at least give their fonts away for free if it’s non-commercial.)
And since I don’t want to pay US-$ 21 for just being able to create a single button, I’m going to use Times New Roman, which looks quite simmilar.
Except somebody who owns the font legally (Dante, I mean) can do me a pleasure and help me out:
    I need a png file with a single W . (Height 11px; colour: see www.ads-software.com logo.)
