• I am trying to install a custom theme on the latest version of WordPress, 3.0.4. Every time I install the theme, I get the error message:

PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THE CREDITS IN THE FOOTER

    1. I have not touched anything in the footer.

    2. I have deleted all plugins, so that is not the issue.

I was able to use the same theme on a different domain through the same hosting company about 4 weeks ago, and it worked. Can someone please advise me as to what I should to do to make this work?

    Thank you in advance!

  • When you say a “custom theme”, what exactly do you mean? Did you build it from scratch, or did you modify another existing theme? Did someone else build it for you?

Someone else modified an existing theme for the organization I am trying to help now. However, I cannot contact that individual anymore for direct help.

It eventually began working fine on my test server, but I never found an exact fix:

Now I am running into the same problem again, but nothing I have tried will resolve it. Could it be the new version of WordPress?

Looking quickly at the source for your home page, it looks like this theme is one of the not-quite-harmful, but still hinky types of themes mentioned in this article.

The theme has hidden links built into the footer (quite possibly either inserted through javascript or an included PHP file); and I’m guessing if those links are somehow modified or removed, the theme will throw a fit and stop working.

It’s even possible that the links are pulled in somehow from an external source (like the original source of the theme, for instance), and if that site is down for any reason, the them quits working.

I know that it was originally based off of the

    “Obscure” Theme developed by WPCrunchy

    https://wpcrunchy.com/support/

Is there anyway I can continue using this theme with some kind of quick fix to get rid of the hidden code or the error message, or do I need to get rid of it?

    I would appreciate any recommendations.

You should probably start by checking with the WPCrunchy support group to see if anyone has any suggestions. Otherwise, you’re probably going to need to examine the theme files pretty closely to find out exactly where the problem might be. Unfortunately, those are about the only two ways I can think of that would allow you to continue using that theme.

If you’re not comfortable doing that, you could probably hire someone to do it for you; but at that point it would probably make more sense to hire someone to create a new custom theme for you, instead.

Replace the included jQuery library with a real version from the actual jQuery website. You may need to use jQuery 1.3.2 and clear your browser cache.
